Two Looks, One Location: A Grand Haven Senior Session
Some sessions earn their spot on the blog just by making the most of a location, and Emmalynn’s did exactly that. We started downtown among Grand Haven’s storefronts — all that Washington Street color makes an incredible backdrop without trying too hard — and ended the evening out on the pier catwalk as the light went gold over the water.
Downtown First
For the first look, we kept things easy: a flowy white dress, heels, front stoops and colorful paint. Downtown Grand Haven does a lot of the work for you here, the mix of textures and colors between the old wooden doorways and the pastel storefronts means you can move a few feet in any direction and get a completely different frame. It’s one of my favorite spots for seniors who want portraits that feel relaxed rather than posed.
Then, Beach & Pier
For golden hour, we walked out toward the channel and the pier catwalk, that steel-and-concrete walkway is one of the most distinct locations in West Michigan, and it photographs beautifully when the sun starts dropping toward the lake. A soft yellow dress against the dune grass, then leaning into the ironwork as the light turned warm, this is the kind of shift in mood you can only get by planning a session around the actual sunset time rather than just “sometime in the evening.”
Why It Works
Pairing a relaxed downtown look with a golden-hour water look gives a senior session real range, you walk away with images that feel completely different from each other without needing five outfit changes or multiple locations spread across town. If you’re planning your own session, Grand Haven is a great example of how much variety a single town can offer when you pick two spots that contrast well.
